South Port meets SOLAS requirements and halves container handling cycle

Meeting SOLAS requirements with reach stacker scales, helps to free up the weighbridge, decrease container handling, saving time and money.

Located in Bluff, at the southern tip of New Zealand, South Port commercial deep water port handles 35,000 containers per year. Located on a 40 hectare man-made island, South Port provides marine services, cargo and container shipping and on-site warehousing.

Since the 1st July 2016, new guidelines require all shippers to obtain a container VGM (verified gross mass) prior to shipping, in order to remain SOLAS (safety of life at sea) compliant. At South Port, a proportion of containers are packed onsite. These containers were lifted and transported to the on site weighbridge approximately 400 m away which resulted in additional fuel consumption, operator time and cargo handling.

South Port approached LOADRITE New Zealand to equip their primary Hyster reach stacker with a LOADRITE L2180 legal for trade weighing system to ensure accurate weighing and SOLAS
compliance. The new systems ensured a minimum of 10 minutes saving per container, leading to greater efficiency and an improvement in container handling operations on site. The
LOADRITE L2180 also allowed the weighbridge to be free for road-going traffic now that it is no longer required for container weight verification.

“Equipping the main reach stacker has enabled us to save time and unnecessary fuel burn associated with moving containers around the port to obtain a VGM. Having a LOADRITE scale on our reach stacker has ensured that we remain SOLAS compliant.” Says Hayden Mikkelsen, Operations Manager at South Port.

"It’s 'Good as gold!' The LOADRITE scales work really well. Operators have no problem using the
